Eric "Red" Schafer vs. Justin "Bacon" Hutter

Sucker Punch Entertainment has the details:

"I have been very busy since my last fight. It looks like I
will not be fighting for the UFC until after the New Year, so in order to stay
busy I am doing a special grappling match at Gladiators Cage Fighting here in
Milwaukee. On Saturday, December 13th, I’ll be grappling Justin “Bacon” Hutter
for the Gladiators Fighting Heavyweight Grappling Championship. This is not MMA
(no strikes), but submissions, slams, and other grappling moves are allowed.
Bacon is an awesome grappler from Waukesha MMA, with recent wins at the Combat
Corner Open and King Grappler (where he was the “King Grappler” winning the
super tournament that I had won the previous 2 events, but was unable to enter
this year due to fighting at Ultimate Fight Night 15). Bacon has a very brutal,
punishing style that makes him the most dangerous and feared submission guy in
the state."

Justin “Bacon” Hutter vs. Rob Smith Preview

Two local MMA veterans are going to go head-to-head at Gladiators: Fight Night at the Fair on Monday, August 4th when Justin “Bacon” Hutter of Waukesha MMA takes on Rob Smith of Roufusport in the main event. Hutter is the #5 ranked 205lber according to the Wisconsin Combat Sports first quarter rankings, while Rob Smith is the #3 ranked heavyweight.

Justin “Bacon” Hutter

Justin “Bacon” Hutter sports an MMA record of (6-5) according to Sherdog and is riding a two-fight win streak. Those wins came over Tim Wsycoki (0-1) at Waukesha Wrecking in April of this year and Jason Hoyer (1-4) at KTK 21 in June. Both wins came via triangle chokes and both fights ended in the first round.

Hutter is a purple belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu under Neutral Ground’s Jon Friedland. Hutter currently trains at Waukesha MMA, a fight team that includes Gladiators Heavyweight State Champion Reese Shaner, Jason Allar, and the Blake brothers, Joe and Ed. He is a submission specialist with all of his wins coming via submission and half of those by rear naked chokes. Hutter’s professional record dates back to October of 2004.

Rob Smith

Rob Smith sports an MMA record of (11-13-1) according to Sherdog and has been fighting for over a decade. He is primarily a wrestler and is a former wrestling coach at Bayview High School in Milwaukee. He has been studying Jiu-Jitsu for over ten years and has won over 80% of his fights via submission. Since rededicating himself to MMA in 2007, Smith has gone (4-1). So far in 2008, he holds wins over Kyle Olsen (25-21), Terry Cohens (3-1), and Steve Shewry (2-4). His lone loss of 2008 came at XFO 22 when he fought Joe Vedepo (7-1) in February, a fight Smith took on short notice.

Smith is currently training and fighting for the Roufusport team that incudes fighters such as Eric Schafer, Anthony Pettis, Pat Barry, and Dan LaSavage. Smith has fought a who’s who list of MMA greats including former UFC champions Quinton “Rampage” Jackson and Rich “Ace” Franklin as well as other famous fighters such as Terry Martin, Solomon Hutcherson, and Mario Rinaldi.

Matchup

This is an interesting matchup and it’s rare that we get to see WCS ranked fighters square off against each other. Both fighters are grapplers with 15 of their 17 combined wins coming via submission and both are currently on win streaks. Hutter is the probably the more technical grappler with a purple belt in Jiu-Jitsu; he is also an active participant in BJJ tournaments, but he may have problems getting this fight to the ground against the wrestler in Smith. Rob Smith is coming down from heavyweight while Hutter is coming up from middleweight so Smith will probably be the stronger of the two fighters. Will Smith look to take the fight to the ground where Hutter is capable of pulling off a submission from his back in order to execute his ground and pound style submission hunt? If the fight stays on the feet will Smith’s Roufusport striking and training come into play? Your guess is as good as mine and you’ll have to come down to State Fair Park to watch the action.
